Weight Management Guidelines & Basics

Key points to touch up on before moving forward: Ignoring the weight management process can mentally wear on you and can cause your performance to weaken on the mat. Here are two important rules to follow ->


The Two Rules Of Weight Management

  1. Rule #1: You need Discipline. The first rule is the most important. Individuals that can endure a rigorous training regiment while managing their weight through a wrestling season will find success on and off the mat.

  2. Rule #2: You must have Commitment & A Strong Support System. A team decision has to be made before a wrestler decides to compete at a lower weight class. This includes coaches, parents, trainers, and family physician.

Youth Wrestling - WARNING

  • Youth wrestlers are growing and need to sustain a healthy diet. Cutting weight at a young level may cause health problems. It can also wear on a young wrestler mentally turning them away from the sport. If you're putting your child in wrestling due to high weight issues, you're on the right track. All the tutorial information in this section can be useful for all youth wrestlers to get a jump start to healthy diet. Youth Wrestlers are encouraged to follow all guidelines below that apply.

High School Wrestling

  • Attention: NMAA set out guidelines that are mandated to all wrestlers. All wrestlers should know the restrictions NMAA sets fourth. The button below will direct you to the NMAA weight management program. Also below is a check list of general guidelines that you can follow in order to be successful on the mat.

  1. Decision Time - Off Season is the time to prepare for any changes. Whether you are bulking up or trying to maintain your weight for the upcoming season, the off season is the time to prepare especially when it comes to weight management. Once you made your mind up its off to the next step.

  2. Communication - Inform your coach & parents of your plan. A good coach will support a realistic plan that is manageable for the season. Set a meeting up with your coach and parents to draw out a plan of action once an agreement is made.

  3. Doctor Visit - If your are at or below 7% body fat a doctors visit is mandatory. Even if you're not at 7% body fat, its still a good idea to check in with your primary doctor. Primary doctors usually have a history record of your health. Ask questions and take notes, once doctor gives approval its time to move forward.

  4. Diet Plan - Preparation is key, a diet plan and training scheduled need to be implemented. Seeking out the right diet plan can be difficult. If you're trying to maintain, lose weight, or bulk up with muscle, an individual plan of action is necessary. You can seek out a personal trainer on this matter. Research & information tutorials on the site can help you if you do not have the means to hire personal help. However, your coach will ultimately know what resources will help you.   5. Training - Follow your regular practice schedule. Ask your coach what you can do extra to help achieve your weight management goals. Whether you're cutting or bulking up, extra time in the gym will get the results you are looking for.   6. Grind - The man who can endure the process without skipping or cheating will be successful. Most guys fall out before they reach the end of the season due to mismanagement on preparation, this is when the two rules (see above) come into play. Those who make a commitment to the process while demonstrating discipline will have a successful season.
